Canadian Veteran Death Benefits

Soldiers are entitled to various funeral benefits, which both veterans and their families should be aware of. We encourage veterans to explore available benefits and make funeral plans with CremationCare Centre in advance. This provides time for their loved ones to grieve and eliminates the need to put together information in a hurry. Several critical facts about veteran benefits include the following:

1. All Veterans Are Entitled To Benefits

Every soldier is buried in their preferred national cemetery and a natural stone headstone and flag. The next of kin is not liable for the costs associated with opening and closing the gravesite, acquiring a liner, or installing the headstone at the cemetery.

2. Compensation For Veterans Who Died While On Active Duty

The military is responsible for all funeral expenses, including body preparation, transport, casket, burial, and memorialization. A $100,000 death gratuity is paid to the next-of-kin.

3. Compensation For Veterans Who Succumbed To Service-Related Injuries

These soldiers are eligible for a $2,000 burial payment, which can be used to pay funeral director expenses, the cost of the casket, and transportation to the cemetery. If the veteran is laid to rest at a national cemetery, the remains are transferred for free or at a discounted rate. This is determined mainly on a case-by-case basis. Veterans are eligible for a $300 interment allowance in non-national cemeteries. This, however, might not always cover all expenses.

4. Compensation For Veterans That Did Not Die In The Line Of Duty

Except for burial at their preferred location, a granite/marble headstone, and flag, no other benefits are provided.
